So...
I just saw Endgame... No spoilers yet but...WOW. It was a ride! I highly recommend seeing it, though I still think Infinity War was better. This had funny moments, emotional moments, GREAT fan service and was overall a pretty great ending to the MCU. There were some problems, but it was still amazing! I love you guys 3000! Bye! OH MY GODS, 9 DAYS LEFT ‘TIL AVENGERS:ENDGAME!!!
I’m SO hyped you guys...but, please, if you see it, do NOT post any spoilers. I want to enjoy this movie to the fullest and I don’t want to be spoiled. So please keep the comments a spoiler-free zone, okay? Okay. Thanks for reading! Bye! Hey readers! I'm Sofia, and I'M BACK!!! (cue dramatic music) from the dead, obviously. Honestly, school has been crazy, and I've read so many books that I can't possibly review in a snap (Infinity war reference!), but I'll try. Today, I'm starting with The Raven Boys by Maggie Stiefvater. As per usual, I'll start with a no-spoiler section and a rating, then delve into spoilers and discuss all of my thoughts. Let's go!
ONCE UPON A BOOK REVIEW So, the premise of the story is that there is this girl named Blue, and her entire family is made up of psychics, but she isn't one. Instead, she just amplifies her family's psychic abilities. Her whole life, she's been told that if she kisses her true love, her true love will die. On St Mark's' Eve, Blue's family goes to a church and watches the "corpse road", made up of people that will die within the next year. Blue can't normally see the ghosts, but on this particular night, one speaks to her, saying his name was Gansey. According to Blue's rather creepy aunt Neeve, there are only two reasons that a non-psychic would see a spirit on St Mark's Eve. Either the spirit is the non-seer's true love, or the non-seer killed the ghost. The (at the moment) very much alive Richard Gansey III has been searching for this magical, ancient king Glendower with his friends Adam, Noah, and Ronan. Blue and Gansey's crew meet up one fateful day and their countless adventures and shenanigans begin. What is a corpse road? Who is Glendower? Will Gansey ever find him? Why does he want to find him? Who are the Raven Boys? Read the book to find out! I think I would rate this book a solid 9 out of 10, and I would recommend this for ages 13+/PG. (Trigger warning for abuse) *SPOILERS IN* 3 2 1 *SPOILERS INCOMING* This book made me feel weirdly nostalgic. Like, it felt like I was remembering a road trip from long ago and it made me feel all warm inside. All that aside, what I really liked about the story was mainly the characters. Ronan was really scary and kind of weird at the beginning, but as the story goes on, we see that he really cares for Gansey, and is not as punk as he would have us believe. Adam Parrish is the one poor kid at Aglionby who is really clever and ambitious and proud, but with hidden depth to him as well. Noah... is a ghost. And an adorable one at that. Gansey is all the clichés and their opposites. A rich king with a preference for Henrietta, and the simpler things. A reserved scholar with a taste for adventure. Blue is a spunky feminist with a ... unique taste in fashion, but she also is scared for Gansey, seeing as she's the one who kills him. Just...uuuggghhhh. I LOVE THE CHARACTERS! The plot is really complicated and it makes you think about the whole puzzle and analyze each piece as it's given to you. I loved the scene where Blue met Gansey at Nino's, and he talks to her on behalf of Adam, who doesn't want to talk to her but Gansey does anyways. Blue then gets really angry at Gansey for being so condescending. That whole scene was so funny because I could picture it happening in my head PERFECTLY! That scene when we find out that Noah has been dead for seven years was really creepy to me, like the Murdered, Murdered, Remembered thing was really creepy and well written. When Ronan finds Adam being abused by his dad, beats Mr. Parrish up and then Adam finally presses charges on his dad...oohh... that was quite satisfying for me. The abuse, though, was scary and Adam lost his hearing in his left ear! I LOVE ADAM PARRISH. He has to work 3 jobs to put himself through school, he's a genius at fixing cars and I can relate to him because I too, don't appreciate feeling pitied and I can really relate to him on that front. I also like his relationships with the rest of the "Glendower gang" (Blue, Gansey, Noah and Ronan.) Oh, and his plan... I really feel like he's a Slytherin/Ravenclaw because he's really clever, intelligent witty and ambitious. His plan was not very well thought out on his part, but the research put in was cool. When he sacrificed himself to Cabeswater, I felt chills run down my spine... It was almost like I could hear his Henrietta accent saying "I sacrifice myself" was awesome. That was one of my favourite parts of the book. As aforementioned, I loved Adam's character, although he could be a bit frustrating. I am excited/nervous to see how he changed because of the sacrifice. Now that that's out of the way, let's talk about the (other) climax and finale. The Whelk vs Gansey fight was gripping to read, and I was really in the story the whole time. Whelk was really a believable character, with the whole "lost his fortune and wants to regain it by any means necessary" plot worked. He felt very washed-up and quite depressed actually. While the pacing was actually slow at some places, I feel it kept a good speed most of the time. On another note, WHAT WAS THAT ENDING? Ronan can take things out of his dreams!? Oh, forgot to mention the fact that Ronan has a bird, a raven no less, named Chainsaw? Ladies and gentlemen, the king of extra! (Also, for some reason, I'm getting gay vibes from Ronan?... just a hunch.) Anyways, sorry for rambling on with no direction, I didn't take any notes when I read this. To summarize, I really enjoyed the book, I loved the the love story/mystery/teen drama/ fantasy with Welsh mythology (A mythology I'm not familiar with) weaved throughout. I found it really interesting and different and I'm excited to see where Maggie Stiefvater takes this. Thanks for reading my thoughts on Maggie Stiefvater's The Raven Boys and tell me in the comments what I missed and your thoughts on this book. Bye! HAPPY READING OH MY GODS!!!!! I am soooooo excited for Avengers:Endgame!!!!!! The end of a cinematic era is here! If there are any Marvel fans with theories about how this is gonna go down, please tell me in the comments' section!
Love, from an EXTREMELY excited nerd. Bye! The field of battle is my temple
The swordpoint is my priest The dance of death is my prayer The killing blow is my release ~Sabaa Tahir (An Ember in the Ashes) Hi Readers! I’m back! Yes, I am not dead, nor have I forgotten about this blog...OK, maybe I did forget about it. But seriously, I am so sorry for not sticking to my schedule. Moving on, I have some changes and updates to inform you about:
Number one- I will be changing my grading system to numbers 1 to 10, one being the worst, ten being the best. Hopefully this method is less confusing. Number two- I might start publishing short stories on this blog. It will probably be my own, but, if you want, you could send in a story of your own for me to publish. Then again, this is a pretty big “might”, so this may not even happen. If I decide to publish stories, I’ll post some rules for the applications. Number three- I will start discussing what happened in the book, so there will be a spoiler free section and a spoilery section where I go in-depth and discuss the book. Number four- I will try to update whenever I can, but for now there will be no schedule. That’s all for now, see you next time I update! Love, Sofia HAPPY READING Hi everyone!
So sorry I didn't update my blog for the past three months. I'll try to get back on track by December. Next book review will be about Prizoner of Azkaban! Love, Sofia HAPPY READING All that is gold does not glitter,
